Mary, RE: To me, it's more like the time Bill Veeck sent up the midget to bat and try to draw a walk. But, if you will remember, the midget struck out.

On the contrary, Mr. Gaedel walked on 4 pitches, then was replaced my a pinch runner.

Anderson School to Honor Intel President Craig Barrett

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 15, 1999--Craig R. Barrett, president and chief executive officer of Intel Corp., will receive this year's Exemplary Leadership in Management Award from The Anderson School of Management at UCLA.

The award will be presented at the school's annual dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

More than 500 business leaders, Anderson students and alumni, and friends of the school are expected to attend the reception and dinner. Among the guests will be NASDAQ president Al Berkeley; Michael Milken; entrepreneur and Anderson School namesake John E. Anderson; and Los Angeles entrepreneur Peter Mullin.

In 1998, Dr. Barrett was named chief executive officer of Intel, in addition to his service as president. During his 25-year tenure at the company, Intel has grown into a manufacturing powerhouse that leads the industry in productivity and chip-making techniques, supplying the brainpower for almost 90 percent of the world's personal computers. In testimony to Dr. Barrett's operational savvy, discipline and drive, Intel revenues have tripled since 1993.

Prior to joining Intel, Dr. Barrett held a tenured position as a Stanford University professor of materials science. He received a Ph.D. in materials science from Stanford, and was a Fulbright Fellow and a NATO Postdoctoral Fellow. He has been appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Education to serve on the National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century.

''Craig's achievements at Intel and his commitment to supporting education make him an especially fitting recipient of this award, the highest honor given by our school. It reflects our steadfast belief that outstanding business leadership is essential to the well-being of the economy and, indeed, to society as a whole,'' said Anderson School dean Bruce Willison.

Each year, The Anderson School honors an exceptional corporate leader who demonstrates a commitment to excellence, the highest of ethics, and outstanding business leadership.

The gala dinner will take place Nov. 17 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The event will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Members of the media may RSVP by calling Lynn Lipinski at 310/206-8197. Members of the public may call Kelly Nardoni, in the office of Special Events and Protocol at The Anderson School, at 310/206-7278.
