Nothing "wrong" per se about Intel trying to make the Coppermine look good but let's reverse the combatants...
1. The K6-xs did well in Integer but didn't have the raw FPU power of the Pentium II-III. With 3 DNow they made it more respectable even won some benchmarks. They were perceived are the inferior chip.
2. Now, let's say the Coppermine matches the Athlon on Integer...but the Athlons (raw) FPU is still the stronger of the two even if SSE pulls out a few 3D benchmarks. Will the Coppermine will be perceived as the inferior chip? It should be. Intel will use it's marketing might to ensure it won't be.
3. I left out one of the most important things..scalability. Try as they may the K6s wouldn't scale as well as the P-XX-XXXs. Not so with the Athlon. The Athlon will outscale the Coppermine...

Now you know why Intel has more than a passing interest in Athlon...
As a matter of fact they are scared to death of it.
