Intel Launches Delayed 820 Chip Set

Nov 16, 1999 (Tech Web - CMP via COMTEX) -- SANTA CLARA, Calif.--After
an eight-week delay, Intel Corp. Monday launched its awaited 820 chip
set for Pentium III-based desktop PCs using Direct Rambus DRAMs.

The introduction comes after PC makers discovered a signal-integrity
glitch that derailed the 820's introduction in late September.

But now, Intel said its "Camino" chip set is ready for the commercial
markets. The company maintained that all major PC makers are expected
to be shipping products based on the 820 chip set within the next 30
days. The chip set is priced at $42.50 in 10,000-unit quantities.

The Intel 820 supports the DRDRAM format from Rambus Inc. of Mountain
View, Calif., as well as AGP 4x graphics. Intel said the new chip set
will enable the Pentium III processors to obtain the optimal
performance from Direct Rambus DRAMs --1.6 gigabyte per second
bandwidth or double the peak bandwidth of conventional 100-MHz
synchronous DRAMs.

Also Monday, Intel said it was offering two new PC desktop motherboards
incorporating the new 820 chip set. The Intel VC820 desktop board
supports the Intel 820 chip set with up to 512 Mbytes of RDRAM,while
the Intel CC820 board combines the chip set with up to 512 Mbytes of
SDRAM. Both VC820 and CC820 boards support Intel Pentium III and
Pentium II processors. Systems using these motherboards are expected to
reach the market within the next 30 days, Intel said.

Glenn, Dan3, Carl, ALL--I have been through the destruction of a valuable thread, over on CSCO. From good hard technical discussions, the arguments devolved into name-calling, until people got tired of the mudslinging and deleted CSCO from their bookmarks. Glenn, as much as I agree with your positions, I believe you are dead wrong in attacking the people and not their messages. Please,

1. Let's concentrate on the messages, and

2. Let's keep the name calling out of it, and

3. Let's not keep repeating the same arguments, and

4. Let's try to get to the truth, not simply be proponents for a point of view.
(Carl, you were guilty of violating this last week when you posted only a portion of a news article, omitting the reference to Rambus. Don Green, you were guilty of this in picking out the 600mbps price, and omitting the 800 alternative. Not big deals in either case, but they do reflect bias and lower credibility.).

I very much appreciate your collective technical expertise. Let's not destroy a valuable resource.

Best,
JS
