October CPI and Housing Starts

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 0.2 percent in October, before seasonal adjustment, to a level of 168.2 (1982-84=100), the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. For the 12-month period ended in October, the CPI-U increased 2.6 percent.
Excluding food and energy, the CPI-U rose 0.2 percent in October, following an increase of 0.3 percent in September.


Housing Starts for October = +0.1% to 1.6m units

Privately owned housing starts in October were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,628,000, according to estimates reported today by the U.S. Commerce Department's Bureau of the Census. This virtually unchanged (+/-6 percent) from the revised September rate of 1,626,000, but 4 (+/-7) percent below the October 1998 rate of 1,698,000.
