Now that (pushing the 800 MHz part forward) is the Intel I know. I'm almost surprised they aren't trying to ship it now.

thanks,

From a small article titled "Intel Is Unable to Meet PC Manufacturing Orders" in this mornings WSJ:

"'We're tight on supplies across our product line, including the new Pentium IIIs, the Pentium IIIs that have been out for some time, mobil product lines and even Pentium IIs' Intel spokesman Michael Sullivan said.
Mr Sullivan added that Intel was not experiencing any technical difficulties and said the recent earthquake in Taiwan 'was not a factor for Intel in it's shipments of microprocessors'.
Mr. Sullivan said Intel expects to ship 'millions' of new Pentium IIIs in the fourth quarter."

I wish Intel would spell out what the issue is. It could be a combination of several things:

1) Poor forecast for the quarter; can't get parts from JIT suppliers
2) Not enough manufacturing capacity
3) Unprecedented and therefore unpredictable demand growth
4) A screw up by a vendor in the supply chain
5) Other

Hopefully Intel will make a public statement to clear up this mystery. It would be nice it they revised 4th Q guidance upward in the same statement <g>.
