Apollo,
Your description of disruptive technology is right on. Clayton Christianson would argue that many desktop or server based applications overshoot the optimal target.

This enables a disruptive technology to target a component of the overall process in a more optimal way. The effect is to more efficiently accomplish the task.

The viewpoint is that NTAP with it's simplified network appliance architecture is disruptive to captive storage and specifically to SANS companies like EMC.

I suspect that we will see the market move to NTAP, but over a lenghthy period of time. I would also expect EMC to respond with network appliance applications of their own.

Best Regards,
Tom
