Not to contribute to the "unfounded rumor" mill, but has anyone thought of the strategic advantage of AOL possibly taking out Intuit rather than Checkfree...?

Random thoughts:

--Intuit has demonstrated its willingness to be acquired before, having been in play during the Microsoft fiasco.

--Intuit lost its CEO -- no replacement yet, I believe

--by owning Intuit, AOL owns the whole enchilada -- personal finances, taxes, web portal, 20% of billpay leader checkfree, online insurance and mortgage business, etc.

--AOL has an army of technical folks at its disposal, via Netscape acquisition & Sun alliance

--what better anchor for AOL subscribers than to get all their bills / bank statements / insurance, etc. through AOL/Quicken (blows away "fluffier" offerings, like "you've got Pictures", IMHO). AOL will keep its subscribers for life...

--AOL gets a huge strategic advantage over MSFT's offerings via MSN.COM, Microsoft Money, and MSFT's soon-to-be-released tax product.

Anyway -- random speculation as I try not to get blinded by those paper profit headlights.............
