The National Post reports in its Friday edition that TeleClone Inc. has until the end of business today to
extricate itself from a jam that could force the breakup of the company. TeleClone is in breach of a
margin agreement with an institutional investor that lent it roughly 5.3 million shares of Nortel Networks
Corp. Lately, TeleClone's share price has hovered around the amount investors will get if the company
goes under. On Wednesday, the lender of the Nortel stock – believed to be the Caisse de depot and
placement du Quebec – exercised its right to demand TeleClone fix the margin problem within two
business days. TeleClone set itself up in June last year as a way for investors to buy into BCE Inc.
without exposing themselves to Nortel. It was considered a way to capture the undervalued
telecommunications assets of BCE while avoiding the volatility and holding company discount arising
out of BCE's 39.6-per-cent stake in Nortel. After borrowing the Nortel shares and short-selling them,
TeleClone bought 6.2 million BCE shares. TeleClone had to maintain a value of at least 105 per cent of
the shorted 5.3 million Nortel shares, and this has not been the case since Tuesday.
