I may be incorrect in this assumption, but they could also retire some shares by doing a reverse split. They don't necessarily have to "buy" back the stock.

Wow! Almost half of the shares outstanding traded today and the stock went no where. There has to be a stock buy back scenario or a reverse split. What happened to the merger?
