The recent PO is certainly loaded with implications.

I've been doing a bit of research on the G* schedule as well as the QCOM phone for it. QCOM's phone will be sold in the US exclusively and besides the other two G* handsets elsewhere. Mobile handset vendors are, as per globalstar.com

Ericsson
This small, light, dual-mode phone works with both Globalstar satellite and GSM networks.

Qualcomm
This tri-mode mobile satellite phone works with Globalstar satellite, digital (CDMA) and North American analog (AMPS) networks.

Telit
Designed in true Italian style, this dual-mode mobile phone works with both Globalstar satellite and GSM systems.

I'm still trying to scope out the timing here. It appears that 10K QCOM handsets have already been manufactured, but no one reports having been able to buy one yet. The 3 month PO probably reflects priming the manufacturing pipeline and further orders will depend on G* subscriber sales. One rumor reports that QCOM will have 40K total handsets available by the g* service launch date in Q1 2000.
This PO is larger than required for those units, I think, unless the fixed charges are very high.

This PO creates OEM visibility in several directions:

- to other G* vendors
- to Qualcomm licensees ... basically, all the Koreans

From my perspective, the $2M is almost irrelevant. What's relevant is for the cells to perform well in this highly visible application.

Thanks Paul for the update and your conclusions about the recent PO. I share your puzzlement about CC's delay in converting; it does make one wonder about the possible schemes and motives involved. At any rate, a retreat to the mid 6's would make me a buyer, in fact, I would begin increasing my position again at 7.
