If I've got my cable modem stuff right, by plugging the modem into the uplink port, you made your whole network visible to anyone on your segment. Be careful with file and printer sharing using that method.

nat32.com has a pretty good description of cable modem sharing.

It is not that it was un-needed, you just didn't know you needed it. :) I also don't think you should need to plug your cable modem into the switch. When you use Wingate (or Nat or ?), your other computer runs through your main computer that's hooked to the cable and accesses the net.

There are many un-needed computer items that we will happy to inform you that you need.:) Just give us a little time.

Congrats on your network
