Channel Checks - Atlanta. First a few general observations. It's going to be a great Christmas. With the exception of Walmart, every game department I saw today had been expanded significantly. As big as last Christmas was, I'm convinced that it would have been much bigger had the retailers been prepared. The last week or so before Christmas '98 found the retailers with empty shelves. You couldn't find a wrestling game anywhere. They're going to be loaded this year, especially with WM2K. Don't forget, Revenge outsold Furby! I can't believe how difficult these channel checks have become. When I bought THQI in '97, you could count their games on one hand, and a THQ game "sighting" was fairly rare. Now I have to take a game list (thanks, Marc) and a note pad to record the numbers. We're gaining market share in a rapidly growing market. Gee, do you suppose that's why the stock is up 7-fold in two years? Sometimes it helps to get out and kick the tires. Walmart 12 WM2K (N64) I was surprised they had it this soon. Don't know if they take pre-orders or not - probably not. They barely have sense enough to get the games out of the box and onto the shelf. 6 RR Studio Tour (PSX) 8 Roadrash (N64) 16 Motocross (PSX) 6 WM2K (GBC) 8 RR Movie (GBC) Target - Department enlarged by about 33%. No WM2K (N64) yet 8 RR Studio Tour (PSX) 4 Roadrash (N64) 3 Motocross (PSX) 6 WM2K (GBC) I wonder why GBC but no N64? Best Buy - Department enlarged by about 50%. 3 Roadrash (N64) 3 Destruction Derby (N64) 12 Motocross (PSX) 2 RR Time Travellers (GBC) CompUSA - Wow! Somebody at CPU woke up. They used to have their console games in locked displays near the back of the store. You wouldn't even see them unless you were looking for them. Now it's the most prominent department - right up front with a big sign, "CompArcade." The floor space has been expanded some 400-500%. Huge selection in all platforms. I'd say they've gone from worst to first. 4 WM2K (N64) 5 RR Studio Tour (PSX) 2 Roadrash (N64) 1 Motocross (PSX) 1 WM2K (GBC) 4 RR Time Travellers (GBC) 3 RR Movie (GBC) Of course, these numbers don't mean much by themselves. The plan is to get out after Thanksgiving (probably Saturday) and do a follow-up count. Regards, Jim PS - Todd, Jeff and other EMAK fans. I stopped at Burger King for lunch and a quick Pokeman check. They were out of the Gold cards, but had plenty of toys. PPS - Mr. Chanos. There's still hope! Burger King hasn't sold a single THQ game.
