Jean,

a very unimpressive performance by GMST and it's marketing/promotion effort

What is it that you find unimpressive?

As for the marketing/promotion effort, I've always wondered if the company wouldn't be a lot better off doing consumer-oriented marketing. There are two things that have been in the back of my mind that might explain why there has been so little. The first is that there needs to be sufficient product on the market to justify it. The second might be that the nature of the e-commerce- and advertising-based revenue model requires marketing to the potential business partners instead of to the consumers. I've never contacted Investor Relations to ask about the company's marketing strategy.

Jean,

I will not byt GMST at this time, a very unimpressive performance by GMST and it's marketing/promotion effort

VCR+ became a de facto standard in 40 countries with little promotion as did the remote control. Gemstar left the promotion to its licensees.

The guide is already beginning to be recognized in the same manner as the remote. I can't speak for other regions but my legwork has shown a much better count than that previously posted.

A simple exercise:

Go to circuitcity.com

click TV VIDEO & CAMCORDER
click TUBE TV'S

Under FEATURES you will find only two, the remote and the guide. X the guide. I show Circuit City stores carrying 13 tube models and 7 RPTV's with Gemstar Inside from Sony, RCA, Proscan and GE. I have seen the new JVC D800 series with the Gemstar guide and am waiting for CC to update their site. Phillips and Zenith have also shipped models with the guide. Panasonic and Toshiba will ship in early 2000. Over 50 different models are being shipped by Thomson alone. They have different models for different stores such as Sears, Wal Marts, Best Buy, etc. Sharp and Zenith have DTV's with the guide inside now in the market.

All in all, the deployment of TV models enabled with the guide is ahead of schedule as reported in a news release a few months back. It took years for remote controlled TVs to become entrenched and I suspect it will be no different with the guide.

Regards
Stew
