Andy,
Nortel has declared that routers are just a commodity. They have followed that statement up with a 50% price cut on their routers. Assuming Cisco can maintain market share, while it lasts, Cisco's revenues could be cut by 50%!!! Do you think Cisco could be a good short sell at these prices? Are there puts available on this stock? Nothing like technological obsolescence in the Digital age eh:-))TIA.
regards,
teevee

Cisco is the ultimate powerhouse in the networking world. Any guru that says Cisco is doomed, only brings to mind images of Newsweek's front cover, after the "Heavens Gate" cult left their bodies to meet the space ship on the other side of the comet. The leaders face was plastered on Newsweek, it was quite a sight. It was sad, but you couldn't stop laughing when you saw that guys face.

Lets not get too far out there. Cisco is going nowhere but up, for at least the next ten years.

My Thoughts:

This guy is too extremist. Anytime someone is telling you that the #1 company in the fastest growing industry in the world is going to be toast shortly, I tend to ignore them. However, if you do a little research on your own and then decide that Cisco might be in trouble, why sell it all now? The best thing to do if you are worried is ease out of the stock until your theory is proved correct. That way you don't miss out if Cisco somehow "survives".

Now if you have been around as long as some of us long term holders you will realize that Cisco has met competition fairly well in the past. They will handle themselves just fine in the coming years.

Let me tell you this: even if Cisco LOSES, they will still be winners in the next 5 years. We are looking at a $250-300 billion market that Lucent, Nortel and Cisco are tackling. If Cisco gets just 10% of this, then they almost triple in size. Not too shabby for a company facing its imminent demise according to some radical folks.
