I agree....I am no fan of agressiveness for agressiveness sakes (as Chainsaw Dunlap clearly demonstrated).

McGinn is I am sure a highly competent executive -- the point I was trying to make is that Roth & Chambers have been lot more aggressive - tactically & strategically than Lucent.

Furthermore, a major part of a CEO's duty is to "lead" his troops and set the tone for the corporate culture. Clearly both Roth and Chambers has set very aggressive targets & created a mood within their companies that they are currently at a fork on a road (an Inflection point as Grove would say) that will determine their position for years to come.

Such a sense of urgency (without panic) is I feel very important for the network vendors as there truely is a Footrace and the gun has gone off. To say that the market is big enough for all of us is certainly true to a certain extent but this is all about Leadership and taking market share away from your competitors at an inflection point -- an opportunity that does not come very often in the old PSTN network world!

Yes, the overall market will grow and Lucent will continue to be a big player but within that growing PIE, increasing your market share from 20% to 40% can mean a hell of a difference for EVERYONE both financially and from an ego point of view.

Certainly when I talk about aggressiveness, I am not necessarily talking about firing employees, shutting plants down etc. I am talking more about making large bets (Bay Networks, Open IP, Clarify, etc.), exploring new direction/markets, and setting a pace/mood within the company to focus the "troops" on a singular goal.

On that front, I have to give higher marks to Chambers and Roth --- Chambers for kickstarting the fight by moving into the Public Network industry and Roth for responding brilliantly on both the enterprise & public network market.

But of course, it's very early in the race and who knows who will come first ---- Lucent does have other advantages & resources that Nortel/Cisco does not have -- especially Ciso so not to imply that Lucent is dead in the water -- just that it appears to me that McGinn has been a good corporte steward -- which may not be good enough in the long-term.
