Ratan: SIFY could do an INFY, wait for a few months. It all depends on how soon they can set up their own 'gateways', how fast they can increase the number of subscribers, and how successful they will become in translating their eCommerce strategy in to dollars..oops rupees, etc etc.

New Delhi: Defence Minister George Fernandes on Monday said the Indian Navy would have to play a greater role in future asserting that presence of the maritime force in the region would allow friendly littoral States to gather confidence.

Underscoring the importance of security of sea lanes of communication in the Indian Ocean as also protection of India?s exclusive economic zone, he said ?the coming century is Asia?s century and India will be a major player to shape the future. The role cut out for the Navy will therefore grow in terms of significance.?

India-China hotline commissioned

A hotline was commissioned at the Nathu La pass on Saturday in order to establish a telephonic link between India and China in the border areas of Sikkim. The first call was exchanged between the PLA Garrison commander
at Yatung (Tibet) and the 17 mountain division of the Indian Army at 9.00 A.M. (Indian Standard Time).
The telecommunication link would be employed to keep both the sides informed of the activities along the borer and "defuse border tensions," an Indian Army release said.
