The Irish were long under the suzereignty of the English, even when both were Catholic, and resented it. During the Commonwealth period, Cromwell introduced Scotsmen, who were reliably anti- Catholic and anti- Irish, into the island, to take over mercantile occupations and help keep the Irish down. The association of Catholicism with nationalism, and of Protestantism with continued oppression, set the stage for their relations....By the way, Parnell, Yeats, and other leaders of the independence movement were Protestant, and that was not held against them so long as they were nationalists.....

Easy question to answer. The "upper" classes are British, and Protestant. The "lower" classes are Irish, and Catholic. The Protestants oppressed the Catholics for centuries. That doesn't make what's happening in Ireland today "class" warfare.
