I believe you can short SPDR's (S&P depository receipts) which are tied to the S&P.

rtalley, if you want to short the general market, I would pick a market basket across several industries. The ones that are up the most seem to fall the most. At the moment, I am just shorting questionable deals like ZIXI......zero revenues, no product, $700 million market cap.

rtalley, there are several funds that short the spx and the ndx, and they have funds that leverage you 2 to 1.

try www.profunds.com
and www.rydex.com

for further information

rydex ursa shorts the spx
profunds ultra short otc (uspix) shorts ndx about 200%

some other short funds include potsx and bearx.

one nice thing about funds, is that most brokers will allow you to purchase them in your ira account, while shorting directly is not allowed.

and since this high volume thread with 18,000 posts has been quiet for over a month, you are asking this question at a quite opportune time imo.
