Steve and Thread,

re: The Bloomberg release

I am very impressed by the goal Toshiba has set for the next few years; a target of $4.8 billion in annual sales by April of 2003 for memory card-related business.

This represents a twenty-fold increase in flash memory card revenues for this giant. Based on the fact that we are pushing $250 million in annual revenues for SanDisk in 1999 it is clear that Eli and Company will also be looking for a substantial increase as well, but we are starting from a much smaller revenue base.

I think this is an awesome announcement and doubt that Dr. Harari or Cindy Burgdorf would be willing to honk the SanDisk horn quite so loudly. I think it is easy to make this inference. So why has their been so little reaction? If you compare this to how badly SanDisk was overlooked last fall (when we were in single digits with a market cap under $200 million (with $135 million in cash in the coffers)), I think it is easy to see that many tech investors are missing out on any news that doesn't spell things out for them in black-and-white.

I looked in IBD today and SanDisk has a respectable EPS rating of 88. And that is nothing to sneeze at.

A steady earnings record, a boatload of cash to finance capital expenditures already outlined, and an extremely compelling growth story. That sounds like a winning combination to me.

Perhaps Sam is correct. We are consolidating a bit here and will have another run at the all-time high by January in anticipation of Q4 earnings.

By then the "Iomega effect" should be kicking in.

Steve and Thread,

From Pen Computing Magazine (October 1999)

re: the Psion netBook

"RAM-based OS"

Unlike the Series 7 (UK only, for now), the netBook is not a ROM but a RAM-based device. The EPOC operating systems is acutally loaded at cold power up into RAM from a CompactFlash card or a serial port. This means that the OS can easily be upgraded and that Psion can extensively customize the netBook to the needs of a customer.

Yet another application for CompactFlash.
