Doug, Using MPLS,IP and fibre channel switching it is feasible to eliminate ATM completely.

Of course it is feasible, but realistically it will take at least 2-3 years before such technology will be well proven to be adopted by large service providers.
What in meantime?
ATM can do what service provider want. Can run IP services and allow painless migration.
Which path would you take ?: feasible or existing.
If you combine MPLS,IP and fiber overall complexity will easily challangfe ATM.
Why rediscover the "ATM" again.

T.A: Thx. The article dicusses the importance of function and control of the entire network whilst I was focussed on the Carrier end. I do agrre that beyond the Carriers there will be both Copper and Fibre.

Functionality will be provided by carriers allowing any protocol ( Exactly as required by the article). MPLS will be in vogue but muxing ,demuxing, switching and Net Mgmt will all be done optically replacing Silicon switching.

Sure, there will be great strides in Control at the edge. That is the point where Net Dollars are generated. I see the NPS offering may be upto 5 levels of Service all at Mouse point. That way Customers and Enterprises can set Budgets and get clear statements of expenditures for each level of service they have requested. The days of free fast surfing will soon be replaced by willful free slow surfing forcing the Customer to pay for QoS if he needs speed.
