"If the back-log of potential subscribers were to grow 20X, and people had to wait months to be hooked-up, do you think they would wait? Probably not."

Well, I have been waiting for months and will continue to wait another 6 months for my cable modem if I have to. DSL is not available to me anyway, ISDN is but I have a 56K. I want broadband, I need BB.

I was getting my oil change at JiffyLube last Friday and saw a truck in the garage with "TCI Contractor" written on the side, I proceeded to find the TCI contractor and asked him when I should expect my cable modem, He said that they had just finished redesigning the entire town (Vernon Hills, IL) and they are in the process of getting to cable modem orders now. He mentioned that he used to work for CHTR in Cali and that he's happier working for T. He said things were much more hectic at CHTR, he also mentioned that everyone who worked for CHTR has had cable modems for quite some time already.

This is a great thread. Much respect to all the contributors here, Happy Turkey Day.

We need to be careful about how long we make the argument that the limitation is installers. Someday it will not be true and we need to be vigilant to see when that happens.

The # of installers has grown dramatically and also the # of installs/day they can do. Cable ready PC's are arriving and improvments have been done in the software kits available as well.

In addition there are areas that have now had @home available for substantial time periods.

Step by step installs are speeding up. Of course so is the # of homes passed.

@home is doing big advertising campaigns in areas that they are newly available. Every time I hear about one a little warning bell rings in my ear. Why exactly? Why push demand?

I suspect because they know they can't rely on the inherent demand pool forever. Sure they can easily get 5 million customers without even trying, but we want 50 million don't we?

DSL is valid competition. Believe it or not so is "I'm too lazy/cheap to bother". Don't forget that AOL is out there sending out free DSL modems to anyone who shows the slightest interest in a "faster AOL".

I'm always on the lookout for data from areas that are well established or where DSL has a serious presence. So far the data I've heard sounds hopeful, but I think that a lot is still to be discovered about what kind of long term penetration rates we will get, and what price will need to be charged to get it.
