Charles,

Electronic News take on AMD's K7-750 relase:
AMD to retake speed crown on Monday

Nov 24, 1999 --- Keeping pace with its own processor speed advertising campaign, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. will unveil a 750-MHz version of its Athlon processor on Monday. The chip will support both AMD's own 750 chipset as well as the Apollo Pro PC133 chipset from VIA Technologies Inc. Persistent rumors have further said that AMD will also announce a major design win with Gateway Inc., but a Gateway spokesman denied that any such announcement was scheduled for Monday.:o( Yet for Gateway to bring AMD back into its fold would make sense, as Intel confirmed last week that it was having trouble delivering full volumes of its 733-MHz Pentium III Coppermine chips. The new AMD parts would essentially take the title of fastest PC processor away from Intel Corp., and would presumably be readily available in volume. People familiar with the matter say AMD had planned to announce the new part on Dec. 13, but moved that date up, partially in order to take advantage of shortages of the Intel part. Two weeks ago, Intel said it would meet all its original orders for its Pentium III Coppermine chips, but that it would not be able to meet its so-called "upside" requests for additional lots of chip placed after original orders. See Arik Hesseldahl's full report on Monday.
