victor,
It appears MC is taking a page out of Intel's old play book. No guidance to analysts, and thus no favorite analyst. That tends to keep expectations realistic or low, and make meeting or exceeding expectations more feasible.

I don't think my post indicated Compaq beating estimates was a lock. I was noting that at one time Intel had a policy of not commenting on analyst's estimates and the effect it had on the estimates. Intel is not the only company that had an arm's length relationship with analysts. Consult the book "Inside Intel" for details.

As far as the Y2k effect, I think it may be too early to draw any concrete conclusions. It might boost sales or reduce them in the high end area.

It would be great if MC advised everyone with a press release or press conference right before Christmas. However, the accounting and legal types would advise waiting for the official numbers and routine quarterly reporting unless an earnings warning is needed. Thus "No news is good news." seems to be the order of te day.

It appears that the Holiday week and long week end is taking it's toll on everyone's nerves. It will be a relief for the market to open Monday morning. I predict that it will gap down at the open due to a Holiday hangover. The hangover will be complicated by various exotic turkey meals designed to eliminate all the leftover turkey. Others will have a feeling of personal destitution due to Christmas shopping spouses. The acidic kickback will produce a run on tums at various convenience stores throughout the US. A little profit taking should help everyone's stomach feel better.
