Lucius,

I do want to defend the use of PM's, which I consider one of the strong points of SI. In any group of people, virtual or otherwise, there are bound to be some conflicts and misunderstandings. If these can be taken to a PM, it doesn't pollute the thread, and even more important the lack of public scrutiny allows people to be less defensive.

I appreciate what you're saying, but my personal experiences at this online stuff provides me a different take. Sadly, some people use PMs to go full throttle at a person's throat, apparently realizing that the cloak of privacy allows them to behave in ways they wouldn't dare behave in public. As a result, my thinking is that if it's of a negative nature and can't be said in public, it probably shouldn't be said.

Another of my thoughts: This online forum is like an auditorium with a standing-room-only crowd. When we post a message, we shouldn't write anything we wouldn't speak into the podium's microphone.

Just my opinion.
