Mike- Of course you're right in that we should never post (or say) anything derogatory that we wouldn't mind having the world hear us say. Human nature being what it is, we don't always follow that rule. My experience with private posting has been better than yours apparently. It has allowed me to make peace on occasions after I had firmly planted my foot in my mouth.
Anonymity sometimes results in rudeness that goes far beyond what the individual would do in person, face to face. This is probably because he/she feels safe from the consequences that might arise in the real world with this degree of churlishness. If worse comes to worse, in the virtual world of SI at least we have an "ignore" button.

regards Lucius

I agree, Mike. One of the reasons I use my name instead of a handle is that I want to constantly remind myself that I should be comfortable with everything I post. If I used a handle I may be more likely to say things I would regret in real life.

>> This online forum is like an auditorium with a standing-room-only crowd. When we post a message, we shouldn't write anything we wouldn't speak into the podium's microphone.<<

And lets not forget, there is a camera in this auditorium recording everything, and it will be available for a long time for anyone who wants to see. We might forget about someone's verbal indiscretion by the watercooler, but ill-advised posts have a way of surfacing again and again.
