I will be glad to be corrected, but isn't SiC = silicon carbide = carborundum, the stuff on grinding wheels and sandpaper? I think it was known to the Greeks. I can't believe it's not naturally occuring, given that silicon and carbon are two of the most plentiful elements in the earth's crust. Maybe in some sort of special crystalline form, but not plain ol' grit.
