Niceguy and Thread:

Some additional dd at BB tonight. I went to my local BB at the Pentagon City Mall (across the Potomac from D.C.). It was near closing so the store wasn't completely mobbed.

The place is still stocked with merchandise, but with many of the piles substantially lower than my last visit. I walked down the first aisle headed toward the back and encountered a haphazard pallet of Compaqs. They appeared to have recently arrived and as best I could tell, were all k6-2s. There were boxes everywhere, on the floor, in the aisles, up above, and on non-computer aisles.

As far as Athlon's go....I started with the Aptivas because they all have a big Athlon sticker on the box and you can easily read the model number. This was my tally:

500 13
550 12
600 6
________
total 31 Athlons

In addition, there were several boxes of NECs next to the Aptivas.

On the Compaq front, I'm afraid I struck out. There were just so many damn boxes of Compaqs...and you can't read the labels unless the box is turned the right direction. They did have on display a Compaq 700mhz Athlon, which the salesman was showing to a group of 3 men. Bottom line: I'm satisfied there is plenty of supply...although I would have liked to see more higher mhz machines...there were NO Cumines anywhere to be found (cf. my last visit with 11 HP 773's)...so it was basically celeron or bust. BTW there was a huge pile of celeron e-machines...someone should tell Kumar as I saw 2 of them being sold...)

One story.....and I swear that it's true. A young woman was being helped by the salesman and as they walked past, she said, "I think I'd like to stick with one of the Intel machines." He walked around hunting like a dog (or insert your own metaphor) trying to find one! When I left, he had her at the Compaq 650mhz Athlon and was talking it up!
