Every year between Christmas and New Year's there assembles one of the most dismal congregations ever gathered from the four corners of the lower forty-eight, and this august confluence is known as the Modern Language Association. Of old, one could hear papers delivered on "The Disappearance of the Mute "e" between 1450 and 1490." Now one can listen to discutants who consider, "Adjustments of sexual inversion: a theoretical schema of what Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson might have done together in a Modern Gay and Lesbian community."
