FYI - Christmas Bird Count Here is a webpage for the audubon society Christmas bird count, which they do every year between Dec 16th - Jan 1. I believe the results are considered official and used in evaluations for endanged species, etc. by the gov't. Anyway, anyone can volunteer for this cause and if you do, they assign you to a small radius for a few hours to do birdwatching and counting. It can be rather dull if you get a dull area but if its Golden Gate park then its fun. There is other volunteer work available too. birdsource.org
