Dan3, re:<These recent moves are only good marketing practice - it was the attempt to block Athlon motherboards that was despicable.>

Yes, the price cut announcement would certainly reduce current (unmeetable) demand. I hadn't thought of that.

W.r.t. the Athlon motherboards, I don't blame Intel entirely. Why should Asus support a motherboard for the 0.25u Athlon when a cheaper design will work for all 0.18 Athlons (lower power consumption)? Also, the AMD reference design was an expensive 6-layer motherboard; they only recently came up with a new reference design which is 4-layer. AMD probably gave Microstar, FIC and Gigabyte the chipsets for free to get them to support the Athlon. Asus may have been convinced to support the 0.25u Athlon by Compaq's promise to handle all technical support issues. Finally, remember that in the pre-August days, the expectation was that the fastest 0.25u Athlon would be 600 MHz, not 700 MHz.

The lawsuit against FIC is despicable. The reluctance of Asus to support their product once they started selling it to consumers, and the slowness of some of the big MB makers to make 2nd generation Slot A motherboards using the VIA chipset are certainly due to pressure from Intel.
