I suspect that our heterogeneous makeup is one key contributor to the problem. But
there are others...

Well, maybe. But much of our culture of violence arose directly out of our hetergenous makeup. The gun cult of the West arose in significant part because of the actual or perceived need to protect oneself from the Indians. Heterogenity. The Civil War and its aftermath had a great deal to do with the cultural differences between the largely Northern European populations which settled in New England and the significant proportion of Southern European populations which settled in the South. The historic enmity between England and Spain carried forward in one country. Instead of wars between countries (which are not usually classified as cultural violence, or else European cultures would be defined as far more violent than ours) we had the same strife within the borders of our country.

This is far more complicated than that, of course, but the link between heterogenity and violence goes way back and has been an integral part of forming the "American" culture.
