Thanks for your interest in my first wireless connection. It was quite a giggle (sorry Maurice but that describes it so well). With any new technology, especially including a new device connected to a Windows machine, and it having to do with the Internet and e-mail, it is natural to assume complexity, difficult configuration etc. On the contrary, I just configured my Thinphone as a modem and set-up a new connection before I left home using "dial-up Networking" following the simple step by step instructions provided by Airtouch at:app.airtouch.com Go to "User Guides", they offer separate instructions for Windows 95/98, Windows NT, Palm OS, Mac and Windows CE. Then I drove to the nearest digital service to my home, the top of Mt. Erie. I surfed the web and sent e-mail from my laptop just as if I was at home except the connection time is almost instantaneous but the throughput is only 14.4 but fine for e-mail and web pages that aren't to bloated. I can't stress enough how useful the quick connect feature is. Almost no sooner did I click "refresh" or a web page than the little Win connection icon pops up saying "checking username and password", then in a couple more seconds the page starts loading. Since I had 4 bars of reception I thought I would test it under more difficult conditions. I drove down Mt. Erie until the Thinphone was only registering 1-2 bars of reception and parked under thick trees. Remaining in my car, I thought, what the heck and, pushed the antenna into the phone. I was still getting 1-2 bars but mostly one. I then connected at 14.4Kbps and surfed some web pages and practiced disconnecting and reconnecting all without delay or trouble. Very nice. I also connected later in the day at 5:15pm and had the same pleasant experience. I am fairly confident that the Airtouch system will work reliably and quickly wherever I can get a digital signal. I will post the first time I lose a connection or have difficulty connecting. I would like to point out that while CDPD advertises 14.4 connections, many users report never connecting at that speed, 9600 is typical under ideal connections and even then lost connections are the norm. Under lesser conditions things deteriorate rapidly. I did not experience any of this. Kudos to Qualcomm! Bux
