As a lawyer, and as the mother of two children who have been identified as gifted, and attend special classes for gifted children, I am interested in the issues you raise. I am guessing that the area you are discussing must have a higher population of Chinese students than we have here in Fairfax. There are quite a few Chinese students in the gifted programs, but the majority of students are of European ancestry, and there are also Asian students from India, Viet Nam, etc. Placement into the GT program is strictly based on test scores.

Lizzie, I didn't know there was such thing as an "illegal argument." As for "politically incorrect," I think your argument would be strictly the opposite in most academic circles.

You ask what Japan or other Asian countries have to do with underperformance here. First of all, I would be careful with use of the word "underperformance."

I thought we were talking about Asians (in the context of quota systems). Japan and other other Asian countries are full of them. I noted that many Asians run large companies to suggest that these people may not be so lacking in resourcefulness and energy to take on all sorts of chores.

How do you know that Asians ONLY know how to be book smart?
We're not stereotyping, are we? I'm beginning to wonder if you didn't have a hand in crafting the speech that Reggie White gave to the Wisconsin legislature last year.

Your standard of worth seems tightly focused on "success in business." Frankly, I've not noticed a shortage of CEOs or bright guys starting businesses. They must be getting an education somewhere.

BTW, I have no problem with an admissions scoring system that uses scoring ranges, i.e., SATs 500-600, 600-700, 700-800. Of course, there will always be those poor souls with the '99s who really are well-rounded quality folk.

Hey, is the Naked Guy still hanging around Cal?

Actually, just to clear up a factual point, the Israeli Army does not include women in combat roles, although it once experimented in that direction. It was too disruptive, and involved the lowering of physical standards......
