Prejudice against Indians and manifest destiny created Indian reservations.

With all due respect (at this juncture), I believe your post to me would have been better posted to the person who made the statement whether being dead is worse than living in a high crime neighborhood and eating dog food.

Which reminds me. I have a friend that successfully convinced a grocery checkout worker that the dog biscuits he was buying with food stamps were for his personal consumption by opening the box and consuming a dog biscuit in front of her. BTW, his mother was half Souix. And he did live on a reservation in South Dakota during some of the years he was "trying to get in touch with his native heritage" (which I've never understood if one is more of a European ancestry than Native American).

But back to the discussion (if it is still relevant), I am under the impression that the resources most of our elderly had put away would outlast their longevity. However, with the break-throughs in geriatric medicine and an inflationary economy up until Reagan's tenure began bringing interest rates down, our older(est) citizens probably thought they had adequate funding to get them through their lives. The "dipping" into the fund which was designed to protect the elderly has far outpaced the payouts to the retirees. However, it should also be noted (fairly or unfairly?) that a wife who contributes little to nothing to the system gets some measure (not sure what) of the husband's benefits. Why should she all things being equal.

But then, who could have foreseen all that has happened since.
