Re: Java

Java is actually one of the keys to the post-server era. When all applications are net-based and all data resides in an enterprise storage network then both client and server become pure commodities whose hardware and architecture is irrelevant from an application standpoint. Ironically, this is the best thing that could possibly happen to Wintel because it frees them from the requirement for legacy compatibility. INTC, for example, is investing enormous resources to ensure that Itanium preserves X86 compatibility and MSFT must work to ensure that W2K still supports long-obsolete 'compatibility' APIs. Freed from compatibility constraints can anyone compete with INTC in processor technology or MSFT in software technology? I don't think so. True, Wintel will become less visible as it becomes more pervasive, but does anyone care what brand of generator supplies the electricity that comes out of their outlets? That's effectively the dilemma that proprietary box makers face looking forward.
