Brees, the 19th century American doctrine of "Manifest Destiny" had very little, if anything, to do with God. It was a typical imperialist ideology, America's version of the "white man's burden" theme. Boiled down to its essence, it proclaimed the God-given right of a racially superior civilization to displace "inferior" peoples in its expansion from sea to sea. People didn't think of their attitudes as being "bigoted." They just assumed God preferred whites to those of other colors, and so they were just doing what God wanted them to do.
