Have you ever read Aldo Leopold's A Sand Country Almanac? A seminal book of the environmental movement. He says therein that one of the dangers of not owning a farm is that one grows to believe that heat comes from a radiator and that food comes from the grocery store. He turns sawing down a tree into an adventure in history.
I think our hunting, gathering, fishing, and agricultural ancestry is somehow deeply imbedded in our beings and we cannot be truly happy for long without being in contact with nature, the wild, the ocean, and the farm. But not limited to, not dependent on. We must have the city too -- the tall towers sparkling in the sun, the university, theater, gallery and concert hall. The brilliant flash of conversation in the restaurants and the long musing silent walks through the dark, tall trees of the forest.
