Re: Web Server Traffic and Web Server Share

I think this post will clarify the Web Server claims made by CW.

Message 12174490

In short, the claims are vague and mostly meaningless with regard to web traffic since the packets are bouncing off 5 or more servers.

The number of web servers however can be quantified with more precision using IDC data. This data does not show SUNW to be the generic leader by a longshot.

Twister..this is really a simple point. There are many companies out there - yes, thats very profound, but there are less companies out there that host servers for the worlds biggest commercial web sites. I can only think of 2 - Exodus and Above Net. I went to Exodus Home page (http://www.exodus.com/about_us/customers.html) and heck they even host MSN Hotmail.

If Exodus says that 90% of the servers their 1700 customers have chosen are Sun, thats pretty telling. Nuff said.

I think this argument is based on an inadequate definition of a "Web Server".

If "Web Server" means a computer with a connection to the internet of any kind and an http server application running at all times that may or may not ever transmit a web page, I doubt Sun has 72%. There are simply too many little Linux and SCO boxes out there, and I'll bet you so-called "white box" unbadged home-brew Wintel machines have as big a share as Compaq or Dell (sorry, no source, just a guess).

If "Web Server" means one of the 5,000 computers in the world that account for 80% of web page transactions on the server side, then I would just as a guess say that between 71% and 74% of those are Sun boxes.

How about this little TWIT...

Lets say a high percent (72ish% perhaps) of web traffic from the US originates on Sun servers... Sun does not have 72% of servers connected to the internet...

Now.. go away... you are just making your self look silly...

EVERYBODY else says it is: 13%.

13% of what? Of every web server in existence counting boxes ... which includes a whole lot of mom and pop sites with 10 hits a day as equal to the Amazons and such? Or 13% of the traffic? Or 13% of the F500 of web sites?

I don't see Sun as trying to put a SPARC in every garage ... they can do quite nicely by dominating the high end, enterprise class sites.
