Anthony,
I'm no expert but I think RealVideo allows the programer to plug in their own decoder and decompression software. This may be only part of their technology. Am guessing they may have their own player on iStyle or a partner who together with Ampex has created a new player.

William,
I am a TV editor. I work freelance for different clients from the Alphabet networks to cable TV. Mostly long form shows (ABC 20/20 etc.-I just finished a Comedy Central Tribute to Jonathan Winters).

I edit on an Avid Media Composer which involves working with video at various compression levels and frame rates.

I don't write compression algorithoms or computer code, so my technical knowledge is very limited. I just use the machines.

All this said, I was very impressed with the quality of the Hugh Downs video. Most of the streaming video I have seen looked more like slide shows than motion video. EXBTV was different. It looked to me that the frame rate was fairly high, maybe 15 to 20 FPS. And this from a connection that was only MAYBE 28Kbs.

My guess is not that Ampex has figured out a new compression scheme (MPEG and JPEG are the norm), but rather that they have figured out some way to DELIVER the video at a frame rate that looks closer to normal video.

This is all conjecture on my part and not based on any fact. It's only how my eye perceived the video.
