Why are the batteries apparently $30+ to Q's supplier and $10 to the major European company?

The first order (hypothetically QCOM) includes engineering charges ... apparently the cells are not a standard VLNC format (startac cellphone, 4x4 laptop). The second order does not mention engineering setup charges ... perhaps the cells are the standard VLNC format ... unknown as yet.

Valence Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: VLNC) today announced that it has received a purchase order from Moltech Power Systems (formerly Energizer Power Systems) for the company's advanced technology lithium polymer batteries based on a commitment from a major satellite and cellular phone customer. This initial order, which represents approximately three months of customer requirements, is for over $2.0 million, including engineering setup charges. Further orders from Moltech will be based on performance and customer demand.

QCOM is derived from the satellite + cellphone distinction, + CC verbal statement that cells are for model to be released in 1Q2000, + offline verbal rumor. Volume + QCOM kind of narrows it down to G*.

It's possible that QCOM has designed the handset with LiIon batteries and just aren't getting enough operating time ... so they went to Valence and asked them to cut cells to fit. Maybe existing phones will be upgraded ... who knows?
