IMO, your demonization of multinational corporation greed as the only hindrance to development is simplistic. There are many hindrances. One of the most deadly, IMO, is when a country does not have the "rule of law", as we call it here, where a contract is enforceable in an unbiased court. Anybody who tries to establish a business in such a country is only going to be successful if they pay bribes and buy protection - look at Russia for the most recent example. Nobody in their right mind would set up a business if it meant that the government would confiscate it - look at Cuba, look at Afghanistan, etc., etc. There are countries where intellectuals are being shot, so nobody in their right mind will teach at a university. I could go on and on, but you get my point, I hope.
