There seems to be a lurking fear that "imbedded chips" might disrupt the availability of crude. Would someone who works with oil and gas wells and the various pumping and distribution systems and controls please specify what devices may contain these "imbedded chips". We used to be in the pump business and the controls we used had nothing to do with date bearing chips. I suspect that these chips may show up when things start to get complicated ... as in the refinery stage ... but I see little need for a date cognizant chip in the production side of things. Maybe some computers on drilling platforms or in well logging systems or in seismic data gathering systems would contain such chips ... but disrupions in those areas would do little to impede the flow of oil out of an existing well.
