Jerome,

I agree with you that competition is good. In this case it will keep Cymer focused on maintaining their lead. I have to disagree with you in regards to your comment about COHR having the engineering expertise to overtake CYMI. It's been stated on this board that CYMI has approx 60% of the engineers that specialize in excimer lasers. Its true that COHR has numerous engineers. However, they deal with a different type of laser.

Similarly, since COHR's speciality is opthomolic (sp?) lasers they will need to devote a significant portion of their capital to this business line. They will not jeopardize their core business in an attempt to overtake Cymer. They will however, devote some capital to their excimer line in an attempt to secure some marketshare. And, they will likely get some marketshare, albeit in the price-sensitive band and selling lasers for qualification (second source) purposes.

I still have not seen anything that leads me to believe that Cymer is losing their "Intel" position within this industry. I only wish I had owned Intel a few years ago instead of AMD. I won't make that same mistake twice. COHR is a very good company, but not because of their excimer laser division (IMHO).

Jerome,

Pardon me, but the statement,

"But Coherent has the engineering laser experience to develop a better product. They also have the financial resources to come up with a better product."

strikes me as rather inane cheer leading.

COHR has the engineering expertise to produce a better product but for some unknown reason or reasons has chosen to produce and attempt to sell inferiour products.

Cheerlead COHR all you want. This is my last post to you on anything whatsoever to do with that company.

Ian.
