Street Smiles on the Wireless Web

TELECOM. WE LOVE IT!... Wireless is like so happening
these days. I can't even stand it. Check it out. First
off, Ericsson struck a deal with Lycos to carry
Internet access on its phones. That union drove ERICY
up by 1 1/4, to $51 1/2. And Lycos? Wow. LCOS shot up
by 6 1/8, to $64 1/4. Not bad. Then there's ADC
Telecom. You heard of them? I actually haven't. But
apparently ADC produces a lot of software and equipment
for communications businesses. And they sold enough of
it to beat earnings. Now analysts are racing for the
upgrade button: Pru, Cowan, and Volpe. And ADC rallied
by a beautiful 9 13/16 points, to $64. What else? MCI
WorldCom jumped by 1 5/16, to $79 7/16. Anyway, I was
chatting with Vincent Willyard, an international growth
manager at Duncan-Hurst. He says that this
Internet/phone thing has legs. Claims that Japan has
already come out with a phone that's got Internet
access and people are actually using it! So who knows,
we may be surfing the Web in between buses now.

It will be interesting to see the analysts' reaction to T's message.

Coincidentally, one of my broker's - from SSB - called me today to say their telecomm analyst (who he claimed is one of the top one's in the game - but I did not ask for a name)just changed his rating on T from a long-time neutral to a strong buy. Of course, he was recommending I buy the stock.

I told my broker I was unconvinced of T's cable strategy given the capital it will require. He then talked about how T's wireless is a jewel, etc. etc. I did not have the time or interest to engage him about CDMA vs. TDMA, data vs. voice, capacity issues and the cost to upgrade, etc. etc.

Told him I would get back to him. Monday's analyst meeting is perfect timing.
