>> There is an irritating latency over a 56k modem though

Yup ... it's not just bitrate ... lots more "software hops" in modem servers ... which throttles the frame rate ... larger minimum interframe time.

>> This is a compelling reason why the broadband players should snatch up the young upstarts now

I'm convinced. TJ, write a check. You may not know how you're gonna use it, but you are, and it'll never be cheaper.

>> CASPs (I just made this one up - Consumer Application Service Providers)

How about:

GASPs - Global Application Service Providers
GIRLS - General Information Resource Logic System
BABEs - Broadband Application Basic Environment

We all know the internet is mostly about BABEs, eh?

Reginald,

I haven't any doubts that the web applications actually fly today, unencumbered. My concerns, however, would be based on the unfolding fill rates of new users coming on line, in the presence of still-to-be-deployed applications, such as streaming video and full so-ho capabilities, under the prevailing HFC architectures.

It's the coexistence of all of these, in aggregate, that I'm forced to consider, not just the ability of any one application to perform in an environment which is still virtually untested for all but the most basic surfing requirements.

I would look forward to the MSOs coming to recognize these realities, and perhaps by their taking into account web apps, among the other influences I've discussed in the upstream, they will become more proactive and begin to make adequate preparations to support a wider range of applications, over time. If they don't, someone else will.

Regards, Frank Coluccio

Boy ... it's gonna take me a while to track through Frank's tour de force ... wowza! You da man, Frank.

It immediately occurs to me, though, that if I was sitting in a room across from the ATHM or RR guys, I'd sure love to be able to whip out a slide showing how specifically the performance of Nuomedia's java design responds to generalized page caching.

I'm fishing here ... I suppose it's not really necessary to go as far as using a CacheFlow box or Akamai/SandPiper hosting ... an equivalent test could be performed much more easily ... via WAN .vs. in-house LAN ... but it sure would get the point across, eh?

Sometimes a little theatre makes the difference ...
