I'm confused. What's new? :)

WAP is a nonproprietory "open" standard. But the creator of that standard stripped to essentials is Phone.com - then Unwired Planet. By making this part "open" they are now the "experts" and the brains on that open standard.

If it is a nonproprietary standard it HAD to be open. By definition there is no nonproprietary standard that isn't open.

Is it that Phone.com was in control of the proprietary standard and decided for whatever reason to make it non-proprietary as in the case of Linux?
