Thomas: One of the advantages of paying attention to Gilder is just what you cite re Uniphase as the "Intel of the Telecosm".

At that time (in the spring of 98) I was looking for stocks in fiberglass equipment supply so that I could have a company to go with in a major way as I was with Qualcomm.

This is when I set up my Telecom GG game on Mike's thread. (BTW wish I had had the vision to include UNPH in my game rather than TLAB, but UNPH was too small, had a limited track record, shaky earnings, not much revenue and relatively untested - it was then what some here call a shiny pebble.)

Did spot and think about Gilder's analysis and insight. The result was to buy UNPH. After due diligence, Mike. (My kind, not yours. )

A good choice then and it has worked out well.

Still think that JDSU is a king. But a king similar to Intel. I think Gilder was on to something then, and still is.

I had known about this thread in October 1998, I would have probably bought and held and be able to retire, but what was I doing, trying to figure how to get rich quick with a bunch of shiny pebbles.

Thank you, Thomas! That merger does look like an entry point. Any other comments from our JDSU experts?

By the way, I see you are an MD. The way we are collecting you guys, and with all of the "old farts" on this thread, maybe we should re-title it "Gorillas, Kings, and Medical Advice"! :0)

So don't be too hard on yourself. If your vision was that good, you would not need any thread.
