That merger does look like an entry point.

It would be very interesting to go back to the date of that announcement and look at the posts in our thread. If I remember correctly, Cha2 counseled all of us about the importance of that announcement with much of the emphasis many of us placed on the Qualcomm/Ericsson announcement.

Perhaps some belated kudos go to Cha2. Perhaps kudos also go to those who participated a month or so ago about the importance of a defining event such as a merger announcement.

I bought Uniphase in the first batch of tech stocks that I acquired when I started investing seriously this past spring. Got it in the 60's at first, have been adding and averaging up since then. First bought it on the basis of an article in some magazine (Smart Money?) about infrastructure plays related to speed and increasing bandwidth; bought a bunch of others mentioned as well, including PMCS, VTSS, TXN, and RMBS. The basic logic of the story was what lured me in, and the increasing share price was what kept me in.

BTW, the merger with JDS-Fitel only closed over the summer; all through the spring one could have got in to UNPH knowing that it would soon dominate both the passive and active markets.

Anyway, it was only during the fall that I realized what I had, and it is the only stock in my current portfolio that is still there from May.

That merger does look like an entry point.

If the merger of 2 Princes forms a formidable King like JDSU, and that merger marks an entry point.......then would the merger of Gemstar and TVGuide mark an entry point for Gemstar? I am mixing apples and oranges here, a little bit, since we believe Gemstar is a gorilla in utero, and not a royalty play. Still, would the merger mark an entry for Gemstar, or should we wait til the tornado has formed. And if the tornado, should we buy at the perception of the tornado, or when the tornado actually happened? Remember, Merlin has pointed out the distinction between Qualcomm's perceived tornado (Ericsson capitulation) and the real tornado, in the way of revenue growth (the year prior to Ericsson capitulation).

Also, is it the announcement of a potential merger, or the finalization of a merger that would mark the entry point?
