Jack - the "free air" term comes from not using a lightguide (or waveguide in the case of RF) to transport the waves . . . shows my age more than anything. The most interesting applications are temporary uses at sites where it is impractical or impossible to run cabling or obtain radio spectrum licenses. The restrictions are mostly physical in nature - distance, interference, directionality, etc., but on a point-to-point basis they can be economically viable.

(My moniker is from the fact that "Bullwinkle" was already taken - if you recall the Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoon, there was a feature bit where Bullwinkle was introduced as "Mr. Knowitall.")
