QCOM's HDR and G*

Although G* will initially be voice only (I believe they were playing with data over the call ititiation frequency) does anyone have any ideas on the Data potential. It would seem that if QCOM's HDR can support near cable broad band speeds in a terrestrial CDMA network, that a similar technology could be used for the LEO constellation. If so, it would be interesting to guess at what the $/bits of internet access would be even at a $1.50 to $2.00 per minute connect. Didn't China (WTO or no WTO) just make a big push into CDMA?

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and in this last
sunday newspaper there is an ad for Iridium with a
rather nice picture of a Kyocera KI-G100 900 GSM phone..(reading the fine print) Maybe the phone in the
picture is a different phone but it looks rather nice
actually. The deal is that if you sign up with i-access
world paging service you get a free phone. Can anyone
make heads or tails of this??

GMPCS has put up a detailed "Satellite Services Comparison Matrix" at

gmpcs-us.com

compares G* with Irid, Inmarsat in various flavors and ACes.

Makes G* look quite good (though I think it's a little unfair to poor IRIDQ)

A visit to Barnes and Noble magazine racks yielded the following G* ads:

Yachts international--None
Motorboating and Sailing--None
Professional Mariner--None
Yachting World--None
American Ship Review--None
Offshore--None
Sail--None
Yachting--None
Sailing World--None

Adirondack Life--None
Montana--None
Down East--None

At which point I grew discouraged and left.

All of these magazines are oriented purely at the US market, the first group to the maritime crowd (of course) and the second to those rugged individualists with too much money who want to be able to get away from it all (for Maurice: Down East is slang for the state of Maine, the Adirondacks are northern New York State).

I would think the decision to use any of these magazines would be G*USA's choice--ie., Vodafone/Airtouch.

Maybe the January issues will have something.

Best,
JS
